Lunch with hubby ....

... it's been another very lazy day here in Mumbai.  I think it's even hotter today than yesterday.  Our initial plans were to visit the cinema - Kathryn fancied seeing Rio.  But we were invited to join Jonathan and the rest of the team for lunch at the Copper Chimney in Worli.  Now, I've mentioned this chain of restaurants before, but they really are rather nice.  The surroundings are always very clean and tidy and the food is wonderful.  I was told, before I came out here, not to eat anything other than vegetarian.  I've not stuck to that.  The lunch buffet at Copper Chimney is 450 Rupees for an adult (that's about £7.50) - you can eat as much as you like.  I had a starter of prawn soup with some mixed Indian biscuits and dips, this was followed by samples of a number of different dishes - fish, chicken and some vegetarian.  Both Jonathan and Kathryn finished off their lunch with a pudding - Indians are rather fond of sweet dishes.

After lunch, Kathryn and I had a quick wander around the Worli area - but it was so hot that we decided to head back to the hotel.  Kathryn wanted to swim and I was hoping to see the Chennai Super Kings cricket team arrive at the hotel!!  Our trip back to the hotel took a bit longer than normal; the first driver took us to Marine Drive and was totally lost.  Fortunately, we picked up another taxi and he got us back to the hotel quickly and safely.  I asked at Reception if I could take photos of the team, but was told No!!  Oh well, never mind.  So Kathryn changed and we went to the pool.

We'd been at the pool for about an hour - I wasn't swimming today but reading my Stephen King book - It.  Then virtually the whole of the Chennai Team arrived at the pool for a swim.  Now I may have mentioned that it's not a huge pool, but I think they simply wanted to freshen up!!  I thoroughly enjoyed the view :)))  And I was very good, I didn't get out my camera!

That's all for today!  Take care.

Birthday bug ....

.... I really like the CR84FN colours this week, cool and fresh, so I decided to make another card using them as the colour focus.

This time I decided to make a card for a guy - I know that cards for men are often a bit difficult, but I sort of enjoy making them.

I've kept it reasonably simple - there are some layers, but not too many.  I started off with a textured cream square card.  I have a super mask from Creative Expression - retro squares - which I thought was a perfect match to the VW camper and I sprayed it with Cosmic Shimmer Aqua Lagoon mist - pretty!  I stamped the VW onto plain white card and colour with Promarkers.  I've used a Sakura Stardust pen for the headlights to give a bit of sparkle.  I cut the layers with Spellbinders Labels 12 (which I haven't used often enough).  Finally I added a simple greeting.

Stamps:  Kanban - Retro Cars 18-21
Inks: Memento - Tuxedo Black; Distress - Antique Linen
Promarkers:  Duck Egg, Turquoise, Gold, Pastel Beige, Khaki, Cool Greys 1-4
Spellbinders:  Labels 12 (S4-247) # 5 and 6
Accessories:  Cosmic Shimmer Mist Aqua Lagoon; Creative Expressions - Retro Squares; Card from stash

I've noticed that I have a new follower, so I'd like to say Hello and Welcome to Joanne - so nice to have you join me.

It's now 3.50pm in Mumbai - the temperature is 39°C and it's very humid.  Kathryn and I have had a lovely time in the hotel pool.  It's not huge, but is a perfect place to while away a few hours.  Kathryn is getting in some swimming practice and I've been busy working on a suntan!

I had an interesting conversation with a young (Indian) lady in the pool yesterday.  She asked "why do Western ladies like to get a suntan?" and I asked her "why do Indian ladies like to use beauty products that claim to "whiten" the skin?".   It certainly showed up a few cultural differences!!

I'm off to check out some of the cards made for this week's CR84FN challenge and for the Less is More acetate challenge.  Bye for now!!

A bit of culture ...

.... was the plan for yesterday.  If Kathryn had her way, we'd stay at the hotel all the time.  She's struggling with the heat and humidity - it was 39°C - and any walking does make one feel very uncomfortable.  But I had the casting vote and decided to go out for the morning.

We took a taxi - tiny little cars that weave in and out of the traffic - to the Gateway of India.  I took a few more photos and even managed to get one or two holiday snaps of Kathryn!  While there, one of the local stray dogs decided to walk with us - much to Kathryn's disgust!  She's  not a great fan of dogs at the best of times - and it was a very scruffy, flea ridden dog.  But he just walked along side of us - don't know why.  We were  a bit early to get into the museum, so I decided that we'd take a walk - along with our new found friend!!

There are some amazing buildings in the area - many of them built at the time of British rule.  They are still some of the most interesting buildings.  Sadly many of them are in serious need or repair.

The pale blue building is the Kennesth Eliyahoo Synagogue.  I'm taking the following information from a travel guide - "it is the oldest Sephardic synagoue in the city, donated by the Sassoon family.  It is used for prayer by Mumbai's Baghadadi and Bene Israeli Jewish community".  It's tucked down one of the side streets just near the museum, and I was delighted to find it.  I would also like to have been able to go inside.

This magnificent building is the David Sassoon Library - I found a gap in the traffic and got this super photo.  The building is part of  the University of Mumbai; and is used as a reading room.

This clock tower is absolutely stunning.  It's called the Rajabai Clock Tower.  It's 85 m (280 ft) tall and forms part of the Fort Campus which is part of the University of Mumbai.  It's built in a mixture of styles and is adorned with figures representing different Indian communities.

As we walked around the streets taking photos of the buildings, it became apparent that we were of great interest to the local Mumbai people.  Indeed, we were stopped several times and asked if they could take photos of us!!  Why anyone would want a photo of me is anyone's guess!  But I guess that a white face is still quite unusual in the city.  And we meet a lovely family who wanted a picture of me and Kathryn, and were happy for me to take a photo of them too!

At 10.15am the doors to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalya (Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) open.  It seems to be very popular with everyone, not just the tourists.  I bought a pass which allowed me to take photos inside the museum - so glad I did, I got some brilliant pictures.  Sadly, the rules of the permit mean I can't post the pictures here!! The museum houses the most amazing collection of sculptures, paintings, weapons, ivory carvings and glass.  It was a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours.  We were able to get an audio guide which gave us lots of information.

When we got back to the hotel, we changed and spent the remainder of the afternoon at the pool.  Walking around in this heat and humidity really takes it out of you - especially if you're not used to it!  I was able to read a few more chapters of my book - and lie in the sun, but not for long!!

That's all for now.  Today is a "lazy" day - Kathryn and I are going to spend some time at the pool.  She's going to swim and I'm going to sunbath and try to get a half-way decent suntan!

Bleached flowers ....

... just a very quick post to share another flower card with you - it's for our challenge at St Luke's Charity Card Challenge - where the theme is to "say it with flowers".

The flower panel was made quite a while ago and has been waiting for the right card - this is it!!  I stamped and embossed the flowers.  I then painted some of the flowers with bleach, which causes the pigment in the paper to fade out.  The amount of fading depends on how often you paint over the flower.  So I've made some flowers quite pale and some not so much!  I mounted the flowers on to some rainbow vellum.  Simple!

Stamp:  Elusive Images - Flowers
Accessories:  Rainbow vellum and card from stash; Martha Stewart punches

Do join in with the challenge - it's for a good cause!

Our adventures ...

... so far - and be warned this is a long post!!  I've already shared a few photos of the hotel and doorman (one of 4 men).  And now I'm going to tell you about our weekend.

On Saturday we went to Elephanta Island which is about 7 miles north-east of the Gateway of India.  The only way there is by boat - not something that Kathryn was looking forward to.  But the journey over wasn't too bad at all, in fact the views looking back towards Mumbai, were amazing.  However, even at 9am in the morning there was a distinct heat (pollution) haze over the city.  The boat trip takes an hour each way; it was lovely to start with as there was a breeze, but it didn't last long, and by the time we got to the island it was very hot.

To reach the caves we had to climb over 125 stairs - the gradient wasn't too bad, but the heat and humidity made it seem like a mountain!!  But it was so worth it.  The caves truly are a wonder.  We had a local guide - a nice guy and he told us all about the sculptures.  They were chiselled into the rocks during the 6th century and the sculptures are magnificent.  Sadly, when the island was discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the soldiers used the sculptures for target practice.  There is a lot of damage, but one was saved because it was hidden from view.  The magnificent triple-headed Shiva statue - The Mahesamurti.  The faces represent Shiva in his different manifestations - the face facing west is Shiva as the Creator, the head facing east is Shiva as the Destroyer and the central face is Shiva the Preserver.  It is quite amazing.  Here's my photo, it's not bad, but there are many, many better!!

There are lots of monkeys running around at the top of the island.  They are a rough lot.  We watched them take a bottle of drink from someone's bag!!  They managed to open the lid and drink the contents.  We gave them lots of space after that.  The walk down to the boat was so much easier going down!!  Along the steps are lots of stalls run by the islanders.  Some of the stuff is nice, some it pure tat!  One thing that is very obvious from the sea, is the amount of rubbish that has been thrown away.  The plastic doesn't degrade and it all ends up in the sea and then collects in coves - it's awful.

The return boat trip was super - there was a strong breeze which really helped to bring the temperature down a bit.  Elephanta Island is not only popular with tourists, a lot of local people visit too, and I was able to get some super photos on the boat - people are very happy to have their pictures taken - so long as you ask.  The little boy with his mum ended up falling asleep - it's the heat.  The young man (right) was super - he took great delight in having his photo taken, not just by my, but by Jonathan and some of the other tourists on the boat.

And I was the subject of just as much interest - Westerners are still not that common, especially in the summer (most visit in the milder months of November to February).  I got a couple of wonderful photos of the Gateway of Indian (built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, but actually finished in 1924).  The large building with the red dome is the Taj Mahal Hotel - a very popular (and horribly expensive) hotel with tourists.

On Sunday Jonathan took us for a walk around the hotel.  We left early, just before 9am.  We saw lots of little shops - all shut at that time of the morning.  But there were still lots of people about.  I think Kathryn found it really difficult - not only the heat - but the fact that she could see that many people live on the streets.  Jonathan said that people might not have a house, but they come "home" every day to the same spot on the street.  It's hard to believe that this is all within a five minute walk of a 5 star hotel.

We got the train - an amazing experience - to Churchgate where we got off.  Jonathan took us through a cross street and we ended up on Marine Drive - an amazingly long promenade up the coast.  This was built on land that has been reclaimed from the sea - the buildings were once magnificent Art Deco houses, but now many of them are in desperate need of repair and restoration.  Kathryn really didn't enjoy this walk - the heat and humidity really got to her, but I found it very interesting.  A few photos from the walk.

We took a taxi back to the hotel and then, much to Kathryn's delight, spent the afternoon in the pool.  We had another walk in the evening - like most countries which are very hot, everyone comes out then.  The shops were busy and it was bright, vibrant, hot, exciting and fascinating.  We finished off by having dinner at a local restaurant - a wonderful vegetarian meal - beats UK Indian restaurants every time.

And today we're having a lazy day.  Jonathan is at work and Kathryn is not keen on going out today.  So I'm going to take my book and some sun cream, and we're off to the pool.  Kathryn will swim, I'm going to try and work on a suntan!  Bye for now.

It's time to Waltz ....

..... along with Waltzing Mouse Stamps!!  This is one of my favourite times of the month.  Each month the team come up with a new theme - and this month the theme is, obviously, EASTER.  For details of how to join in check out Claire's blog here.

I've had such fun making Easter cards this year, and I'm really pleased with this one.  On the WMS Facebook page there has been some discussion about Stampin' Up! inks and clear stamps - well I can tell you that there are no problems at all - check out the card.

I got the colour theme from the Stampin' Up! Colour Coach - which has been really useful.  I wouldn't have picked these colours to go together, but they work!!  I stamped the background with Pic-Nic patterns and then made some Easter Eggs which I layered onto the card base.  I added a simple Easter Greeting and a little butterfly!  This card has been sent to my brother-in-law and his family to wish them a Happy Easter.

Stamps:  Pic-Nic Patterns, Nestie Eggs, Spring Baskets
Inks:  Stampin' Up! - So Saffron, Wild Wasabi, Rose Red
Spellbinders:  Nested Eggs (S4-264) # 2, 3 and 4

I'm going to try and get around all the blogs, but as I'm on holiday it may take a while.  Wishing everyone a Happy Easter :)

CR84FN24 ....

... it's that time again - the new CR84FN colour challenge.  And we have some really cool colours for you this week, and I mean that literally - light blue, aqua and cream - really cool!!

These are such pretty inspiration pictures, courtesy of Martha Stewart - isn't that cake wonderful?  You may recall from last week's post, that I got my dates mixed up, while the rest of the team were sending Birthday Greetings to Sue Lelli with the beautiful pink, black and cream combination, I'm using this week's colours.  So, Sue - Happy Birthday and here's your card.

I made the card base from a beautiful piece of textured card stock from my stash - it's a lovely thick card.  The image is one that I first saw on Rosemary's card in CR84FN16 - I liked it so much that I bought it!  I stamped it using Versamark and then heat embossed it with Cosmic Shimmer Olympic Gold Lustre, which is  rich cream colour.  I painted the flowers using Twinkling H2Os - but you can't really see the shimmer - but it looks lovely.  I used one of my (many) Martha Stewart border punches to make the trellis effect.  Finally I added two ribbons, one pale blue and one aqua, and a simple birthday sentiment.

Stamps:  Hero Arts - Large Blossom
H2Os:  Mediterranean Blue, Guatemalan Green, Chestnut Brown
Accessories: Martha Stewart punch; Craftwork Cards greeting sentiment; Cosmic Shimmer embossing powder; Card and ribbons from stash

Now, don't forget to visit the rest of the Design Team and our Guest Designer for the month of April, Silke Ledlow,  for more inspiration.

Some photos .....

... just a very quick post to share a few photos taken yesterday and today.  We are staying at the ITC Grand Central - an extremely posh and beautiful hotel in central Mumbai.  While out with Kathryn yesterday morning, I took a few photos of the hotel - it's lovely!

When we enter or leave the hotel the front door is opened by the Gentleman below - he's so nice and looks fantastic in his uniform.  He's very happy to pose for photos - and I may take a few more before the holiday's over.

The ladies on reception are, without exception, absolutely beautiful.  They all wear this beautiful pink silk dress as their uniform - they are all so friendly and welcoming.

That's all for now.  We had  a fantastic trip out to Elephanta Island today - I'll share that with you on Monday.  Don't forget tomorrow is the Waltzingmouse Blog Waltz and the new CR84FN challenge.  See later.

Funky flowers ....

.... I've made another card for the St Luke's Charity Card Challenge where the theme this month is to

"Say it with flowers!"

We've had a steady number of entries, but it's such a good cause and a really super challenge that I'd like to encourage you to have a play!  Here's my card:

This one is really quick and easy.  The central image is a piece of clip art that comes from Microsoft - I like some of the abstract images you can get, they make great cards.  The base card is from Papermania - they made a series of beautiful pearly cards in dark colours, sadly now discontinued, and I only have a few left.  I decided to use peel offs on this card - they are incredibly versatile and can be really lovely.  I stuck them to plain white card and coloured them in with Sakura Stardust pens - so the flowers have a fabulous shimmer.  I attached some direct to the card and some on dimensional pads.  I finished it off with some of the flourishes from the peel off sheet.  I decided not to put on a sentiment, as I think it can be used for almost anything.  I'll be sending this one to St Luke's when I get back from India.  If you send your cards to St Luke's please can you make sure you use a stamp on your parcel - unfortunately, we can't use the Freepost address.  Thanks for your assistance.

Peel Offs: Elizabeth Craft
Pens:  Sakura Stardust
Accessories:  Card from stash; Image from Microsoft Clipart

Our first evening in Mumbai has been really lovely.  We went to the Phoenix Shopping Centre, which is a complex of fabulous shops.  One thing is very obvious, and that it the extremes.  On the way to the shopping centre - extreme poverty with homes on the edge of the pavement if, indeed, they can be called homes.  More sheets of canvas hung across poles.  And then in the shopping centre, itself a magnificent air conditioned building, are some of the most exclusive shops names around - Dior, Clarins to name only two.  They are very, very expensive.

We had dinner in a lovely Thali restaurant - small sample of lots of different dishes - all vegetarian, all superb.  Well, Jonathan and I enjoyed the meal, but Kathryn wasn't quite so keen.  Fortunately, there's also a McDonald's there too - so she was able to have an ice-cream there.

Today Jonathan is at work and that leaves time for Kathryn and me to have a restful day.  Oh yes, don't be fooled by the time of posting - I'm typing this at 8.45am Mumbai time.  Bye for now.

Thursday, 14 April 2011

We've arrived ....

...  the flight was really good; actually surprising comfortable despite being in "cattle" class!  The cabin crew were really polite and helpful, and the food wasn't half bad.  And I was able to watch a couple of films on route - The King's Speech - I can see why it won lots of Oscars, and Harry Potter - which was really good fun, but I missed the very end as we were coming into land at Mumbai!!  Oh well, I'll have to catch up with that later.

Jonathan met us at the airport and the journey back to the hotel was something else!!  I think traffic signals, road lanes and road courtesy are all entirely optional!  I sat in the front seat and ended up closing my eyes several times!!  The ITC Grand Central is absolutely magnificent.  I'll take some photos tomorrow and share them - very, very posh with lots of marble and mirrors and, more importantly, air conditioning!!!!  We're on the 20th floor so the views are quite amazing.  Our room is large and airy for one, but a little cosy for three - but we'll cope.

And that's all for now, as I need to unpack our suitcases and shake out the creases!!  It's 2.40pm Mumbai time and very hot, so we're going to have a quite afternoon and go out this evening.  It's so exciting!!

Today's the day ....

... ironing done, bags packed and we're ready for the off!!  And I've not packed a single crafting item!!  I know that may come as a complete surprise to some of you :)  You know who you are ;)  Chrissie - I have remembered my toothbrush!!

Kathryn and I are looking forward to spending some time with Jonathan and exploring Mumbai.  And I will take time to relax, have a swim and spend some of my holiday enjoying one of my other favourite hobbies - reading!!!  I intend to have a mega Stephen King fest - will get a few books at the airport.  I'm not looking forward to the flight - it's so, so long!!

Before I head off, I'd like to say hello and welcome to Charmaine - thanks for becoming a follower!!  Bye for now.

Less is More, Part 3 ....

... well I've not managed to make a card for the Waltzing Mouse Sketch Challenge yet, but I have had another go at LIM10 - to focus on the sentiment.  While I really like the Einstein quote that I put on the mini-card yesterday, it is rather plain and I think it needs something - ideas welcome!!

So I played again - I remembered that I had this big stamp from Docrafts - it's been used quite a bit, but not recently.  So I found a pale blue scalloped edged card, inked up the stamp, added a small image and a bit of glitter and hey presto - my third attempt at this challenge!!

I'm really pleased with this one.  It's clean, simple and fun - and can be used for all ages.  I did think about making one in pink, but I'm running short on time - should be packing - so I decided to stop.

Stamps:  Docrafts -  Birthday Stamp;  Papermania - It's a Man's World - Party Animal
Ink: Kaleidacolour - Blue Breeze
Accessories:  Card and glitter from stash

That's all for today - lots to do, but I hope to be able to share a card with you tomorrow.  Bye for now!

So busy ....

... so there I was last night thinking about what I need to pack for our trip, knowing that I'd need the large suitcases.  I checked both wardrobes where they are kept, but no cases.  Then I realised - the ones I was looking for are already in India - Jonathan took them!!!  Doh!!!  So this morning I've been running around like a mad thing!  Had to collect some tablets from the pharmacist, post some letters and then go off and buy some new suitcases, and I couldn't think where to get any.  Then it came to me - Tesco - they sell everything!!  Not always my favourite or top choice, but quick and convenient and I got just what I needed!

I've also managed to squeeze in a haircut prior to my trip - I needed to get it sorted, so it's nice and short and easy to look after.  Actually, the best cut for ages, so I'm very pleased.  Don't think Jonathan will notice much :)

And I've also been busy in my craft room - I can share one of the cards I've made today, but you'll have wait and see for the rest!  I know, I'm being a tease!!  So this is the one I can share.  It's another for the Less Is More - Sentiment Focus.  It's about as clean and simple as you can get!  I did play around with the idea of a subtle image, but I couldn't think what to do and it's only a very small card - 3" × 3" - so I stuck to the sentiment - it's a quote from Albert Einstein - one of my heroes!

Stamp:  Waltzingmouse - Words of Wisdom
Inks:  Memento - Tuxedo Black; Marvy le Plume - red pen

I've just been checking on line for the temperature in Mumbai - 38°C - that's very, very hot!!  I think I may melt.  But I'm getting very excited now.

That's all for now.  I'll try to post a card tomorrow - I still want to do one for this week's Waltzing Mouse Sketch challenge - but it all depends on time!!  And before I go, I must also welcome a new follower - Hello and welcome to Andrea Ewan, glad you decided to join me :)  I know I tend to ramble, but it's kind of fun!

CR84FN23 ...

.... and so another week zooms past!!  And here we are again, time for this week's CR84FN colour challenge.  Mona has come up with a really elegant and feminine set of colours this week - light pink, black and cream.  Just gorgeous!

I love the inspiration photos, and that cameo necklace is just fabulous.  The pictures are courtesy of Martha Stewart - her site is always worth a visit!!  As soon as I saw the colours for this week's challenge, I knew who I'd be making the card for.  I have a friend who is the most elegant of women, and she loves black accented with most colours.  So this card is for Kath's birthday - which is at the end of the month, but I'm getting ahead as I'm off on holiday soon (more of that later).

The base card is a lovely pearly cream and it has a subtle pattern on it which, sadly, doesn't show on the photo!!  The backing paper is by Pink Petticoat and comes from a set that I got free with Quick Cards magazine.  The black lace square is in fact a stamp that I got from Joanna Sheen (don't remember the name). I stamped it, using Versamark, onto some vellum and then heat embossed it with a black sparkle powder - it has a fabulous shimmer.  I mounted it onto the largest of the new Spellbinders Fleur de Lis squares - I used a super pale pink textured mirri card.  The cream lace rose was a gift from Kath - it was one she found when going through her mum's old sewing box.  Finally, I added a tiny birthday sentiment - these are from Dawn Bibby; I really like the small peel offs.

Stamps:  Joanna Sheen - Lace Stamp
Spellbinders: Fleur de Lis Squares (S4-318) #4
Paper:  Pink Petticoat - Vintage Rose Collection
Accessories:  Card, ribbon, embossing powder, lace rose, peel offs - all from my stash

I know that the rest of the Design Team have come up with some wonderful cards for this challenge, do drop by and check out their work and don't forget our Guest Designer for the month of April, Silke Ledlow.
Silke Ledlow- Guest Designer

I have a very busy day ahead.  I mentioned earlier about a holiday.  Well, Kathryn and I are going to Mumbai in India.  We are going out to see Jonathan, my husband, who's been out there on business since the middle of February.  As you can imagine, we are both looking forward to seeing Jonathan.  So I've got to sort out the packing, schedule some posts for while I'm away and make sure the house is clean and tidy before we leave.  As I said - BUSY!!

That's all for now - for full details of the challenge check out the CR84FN blog, and I look forward to visiting your blogs and seeing your cards.  Bye for now.  See you tomorrow!

Edited:  Oops!!  In the madness and mayhem of holiday preparations, I mixed my dates - I'm sending birthday greeting to Sue next week :))))  So I'll join the team now in sending Sue Happy Birthday greetings from the UK!!

Two in one ....

... I've had a very busy morning in my craft room and have made lots of cards - but you'll have to wait and see!!  I know, it's a tease;))

However, I do have a card to share with you now.  I've combined two challenges - this week's colour challenge from The Play Date Cafe - which is absolutely gorgeous, and Less Is More's one layer challenge to focus on a sentiment.

I've made a Christmas card - keeping up with those resolutions - and used some slightly neglected stamps too!

I stamped the large word with Versamark and embossed with silver.  The letters have been painted with Twinkling H20s - which look really lovely in real life, but never seem to work in photos!!  And I added some snowflakes in a very subtle blue.  Should have stamped the word "Christmas" in London Fog!!  I'll try to do another card before I go away so see the difference, but I may not get the chance.

Stamps:  Stampendous - Christmas words (I think); Inkadinkadoo - Snowflakes a plenty
H2Os:  Guatemalan Green, Autumn Skies, Wild Blueberry
Inks:  Memento - Summer Skies

I think that's all for today.  I'm going to make a late lunch (early tea) for Kathryn and me!!  Then I'm back in my craft room to make some more cards.  Don't forget to check in tomorrow for the new CR84FN challenge - Mona has picked some fabulous colours!!  Do join us.
